COLIN

COLIN L. KARLSEN

On bass, Colin Lilius Karlsen (b. 2003) from Skien Norway. One of the  great young bassist in Oslo. He has specialized in american jazz, moroccan gnawa music and norwegian folk music. With humility and respect for the traditions, Karlsen works with the music in new ways on the double bass, ways that few explore.

KJELTRING is a young trio from The Norwegian Academy of Music. The trio consists of Åsmund A. Farstad on fiddles, Colin Lilius Karlsen on double bass, and William Dillner on drums. The trio is based in Oslo and came to this word in December of 2022. The band has had plenty of concerts in Norway, and has performed in Sweden as well.

The base of the music for KJELTRING is the Norwegian fiddle tunes. A broad and diverse tradition. The fiddle tunes get placed in a band that plays hard and rough. Drums follow the rhythms in the fiddle tunes, and add on hits, runs and ornamentation. Both bass and fiddle explore the microtonal harmonies of the tunes and expand further upon them. KJELTRING has taken the task of putting traditional music in a band setting with respect, knowledge and humility.  Improvisation is a key element of the trio´s music, you will never hear our music repeated the exact same way. All this in addition to our clear inspiration from rock music, both tonal and rhythmical makes KJELTRING a band of its own.

The trio of young rascals from Oslo build upon the great fiddle tunes of Norway. The traditional music gets welded together with hard basslines, microtonal harmonies, groovy rhythms, free-improvisation and a tight sound. A concept from heaven, or maybe even hell.

Let your feet stomp and lose yourself into the musical trance to Åsmund A. Farstad on fiddles, Colin L. Karlsen on bass and William G. Dillner on drums.

The fiddlers of old times were rock-stars in their villages, but they didn't have bass, drums, amplifiers and distortion. KJELTRING does.
